Dare To Do Things Differently

Good morning, G.O. readers!

Yes, it’s been a thousand years since I last wrote anything on my blog, but I’m back.  I think it’s unnecessary for me to say just how much my time management skills suck.  I won’t even start harping again on how much I have going on.  I know that I could carve out at least 20 minutes a day to find something meaningful to post on my Girl October blog, but in all honesty, I haven’t made it a priority.  I’ve still been giving more blog and Twitter love to my Missy Show pages, (based on my Blog Talk Radio pet show:  www.blogtalkradio.com/shesatortie  www.twitter.com/missyshow
and www.shesatortie.blogspot.com ). I feel this is necessary since I’ve had it up and running longer. And I’ve also been heavily in the editing process with my book.  Fingers crossed, but I should be submitting it to a publisher before this month is out.

Okay, back to the matter at hand.  While I was taking a relaxing soak Saturday evening after completing The Missy Show, I got some inspiration for an entry for my G.O. blog.  So here I am.  As most of us are prone to do from time to time, I started thinking about the things in my life that I feel could be better.  There are so many things and habits that I would like to change, but sometimes the sheer number of them can feel overwhelming.  Then the thought occurred to me, what if we just focused on doing a few small things differently each day?

Don’t just lay around like us.  Do something different!

I know because I can be a perfectionist, there are times where I want to make several huge changes, so that I can truly feel valuable and accomplished.  But having this attitude can leave me defeated before I even begin.   I thought what if instead, I focused on doing just one or two things differently?  Sometimes I will play a game with myself where I’ll challenge myself to purposely do the opposite of what I’d normally do.  So if someone says something to me that would normally get me riled up or would hurt my feelings, I’ll ask myself, what would I normally do?  And then I’ll choose to do the opposite.

In the example I just used, I might choose to not take what that person is saying personally and instead of engaging with them negatively, go and do something productive like working on my writing, blogs, or social media pages.  If you usually come home and plop down in front of the TV each day, becoming a mindless zombie, why not choose to walk in your neighborhood or hop on the treadmill for 30 minutes, instead?  If your boss gives you an assignment you find dumb and pointless, instead of going into your normal mental tirade of how much things suck at work, choose to place your focus on ways the situation can be improved, (and if things can’t be improved, choose to brain storm on ways you can create new money making opportunities that would remove you from the situation entirely).

The thing is, you don’t have to do 50 things differently each day.  Start off small.  Even if you just do one thing in a different, positive way, you’d be surprised by how much you’d be opening yourself up to a fresher perspective.  So many times, things in our lives can get desperately stale.  We follow the same patterns over and over again each day.  It’s up to us to slowly add some spice to our thoughts and actions.  Make a new recipe you’ve never tried for Sunday dinner.  Try an alternate route to work.  Clean out a junky closet 30 minutes at a time over the course of a couple of weekends if you feel overwhelmed by doing it in one.  Write your partner a short love note or get them flowers (even if it’s not Valentine’s Day).  Tell your child what makes you proud of them even if nothing special’s going on.  If you’ve been thinking about joining a church or returning to one, but are a little nervous maybe start off by listening to some sermons online or visiting a church with an early service that might not be as long, (just to try things out).  Or if you’re a blogger like me, with more than one blog, start a draft and write a little bit each day.  And even if it takes you three days to publish it, at least you can say you did it.

So let’s keep things fresh, people.  Let’s dare to do something different no matter how small each day, toward our spiritual and personal growth.  And watch me………I know I’ve said it before.  But this time, I’m going to put out another entry before this week is over.  Which means I have until Saturday night………….

Stay tuned peeps.
Until next time……God bless,
Girl October

Not my pic, but it’s darn sure cute!
